Educo Adventure School, 100 Mile House BC -Work at Educo

We’re Hiring!

POSITION: Site and Program Development Assistant – Educo Adventure School

REPORTS TO: Program Manager – Educo Adventure School

LOCATION: 100 Mile House, Canada

CONTRACT INFO: 6 weeks (July 13 – August 21), 35 hours per week, 15.63 per hour, accommodation in cabins provided throughout, food provided on work days (Monday through Friday)

EDUCO, THE APPROACH:

Educo Adventure School aims to be more than just an outdoor classroom: we seek to create meaningful experiences that draw forth our students’ emotional, social, and spiritual development. We believe this is fostered through deepening connections with the natural world, embracing challenge, and learning the intricacies of intimate teamwork. We learn experientially – hands-on! Educo offers opportunities for young people to disconnect from the digital and online arenas and to cultivate a sense of belonging in the world as they journey through our local mountains, forests, lakes, and rivers.

EDUCO, THIS SUMMER:

Following clear direction from the Provincial Health Officer and BC Camps Association, we have made the difficult decision to cancel all our programming for the 2020 season. As such, there will be no students on the site this summer. Instead we will mainly focus on site maintenance and development (renovations, enhancements, groundskeeping, etc) as well as some program planning and development (building curriculums for future years, potentially scouting mountain routes, etc). This work will lay the foundation for us to come back stronger than ever in 2021.

EDUCO, THE CULTURE:

Educo Adventure School has a rich history in youth work and community living. In a loving and supportive environment, we encourage each other to step beyond our preconceived limitations and to express ourselves fully and creatively. We work collaboratively and we value one another’s contributions. We ask of our staff what we ask of our students: a willingness to step beyond our comfort zone and to practice vulnerability and appreciation. This year’s staff team will be smaller even than usual, likely between 5 and 8 people at a given time.

EDUCO, THE PLACE:

Our beautiful site is remote and right on the edge of Little Holden Lake. There is no running water (read: no showers), no cell reception, and little to no electricity. Depending on what phase we’re in within BC’s Restart Plan, access to 100 Mile House and its amenities may be limited.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Will be many and varied! Flexibility is key. Site and Program Development Assistants will work in collaboration with the Program Manager and other members of the full-time Educo team on various projects, some of which are currently still TBD. Responsibilities are likely to include:

Site maintenance: cleaning (including outhouses), chopping wood, filling potholes, mowing and weed whacking, setting traps, dump and recycling runs, etc.

Site development: construction (with supervision and support), renovations (with supervision and support), digging, painting, etc.

General community tasks: team meetings, team games, doing dishes, cooking, etc.

Program design: sharing and documenting resources, coming up with creative new ideas for future programs, perhaps building scavenger hunts, etc.

Program logistics: printing and organizing maps, potentially scouting routes for future programs, checking and repairing gear, etc.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Age 30 or under as of July 6, 2020 (as this is a Canada Summer Jobs funded position)

Work experience in construction/groundskeeping OR outdoor/experiential education OR (ideally) both

THE JUMP! – EDUCO PARTNERSHIP:

Educo and JUMP! have entered into a strategic partnership to innovate and expand the impact of Educo Adventure School. For more information on JUMP! Canada, please visit www.jumpcanada.org.

HOW TO APPLY:

Please email your resume and cover letter to info@educo.ca. Only complete applications will be read or considered. Applicants will be considered on a rolling basis until all three available Site and Development Assistant positions are filled OR the day before the start date (July 12).
