The Story of Soar 40 More!
It’s hard to believe but the talented, whacky and incredible staff of Educo BC have now been drawing inspiration, confidence and creativity out of young people for the past 40 years! The faces around the site keep changing yet somehow through several generations of staff members, students and volunteers, the heart of Educo remains consistent and strong. Year after year students leave the site with the feeling that their life has been changed forever.
And while the core has not changed, the world around Educo has. The escalating level of outdoor recreation standards, the crazy climate changes and the ever exciting financial environment has put Educo at a sort of crossroads.
In the past few years interest in Educo’s programs has skyrocketed and the organization has been working hard to create high quality initiatives to meet our growing demand while maintaining the exceptional programming we have been offering for the past 40 years.
Some recent exciting Educo developments include the increase of community development work in the South Cariboo, the upgrading of our high ropes course and climbing wall, the creation of more year-round staff positions, the delivery of higher quality staff training and the creation of Educo programs to be offered during the winter months.
These changes provide more opportunities for youth in BC to experience our unique programming, and our new ventures are helping us build a more sustainable Educo for the years to come.
The challenge for Educo now is, while we are committed to expanding and strengthening our organization, we are faced with many unexpected financial obligations. Along with the costs of the new initiatives, the current economic situation in North America has affected us. We have seen an unexpected drop in enrollment in our summer courses which account for a large portion of our yearly funding. At the same time, the mountain pine beetle and changing weather patterns have taken their toll on the site and we have had to rebuild our low ropes course, re-roof our buildings, replace our dock and increase the safety of our ropes course.
In the face of these challenges, on our 40th anniversary we are responding by calling upon the Friends of Educo to gather around and help us to continue to reach our potential. We have created a Soar 40 More Fund! that will help lessen the impact of the economic recession and will support the organization to implement a capital replacement and financial sustainability plan that will help us Soar 40 More Years!
