Do I need to bring everything on the equipment list?
Yes! What's on the list is what we consider the essentials for the safety and comfort of each participant. If you are coming with a friend you can share soap, shampoo and bug repellent.
Do you have any equipment to rent?
We have a limited number of sleeping bags and back packs for rent. The cost for renting is $25 each for the duration of the course. Please call the Educo office to reserve.
Do I have to bring hiking boots?
We recommend a medium weight hiking boot with ankle support to prevent sprains.
How many people are on a course?
Our camp holds a maximum of 40 students. Each course group is divided into cabin groups of 8-12 students, with whom most of the course activities will take place.
If I come with a friend will I be in with them?
Yes, you can request to be in the same cabin group with a friend, but requests aren't guaranteed. Because our student groups are so small (8-12 students) we encourage requests to be limited to one other person. Part of the Educo experience is making new friends!
What if I can't afford the course? Do you have scholarships available? Partial scholarships are available. Please see the Bursary/Scholarship section on our Enroll Now! page, respond to the statements and enquiries and send it to the Educo office.
How do you choose your staff?
Our staff are chosen for their abilities with people and children, their integrity and their enthusiasm for life. Many of our staff have started as Educo students. Then they may volunteer for a couple of years, take our leadership training course, and then take the necessary training to qualify to be an instructor. Applications, interviews and a current criminal records check are part of qualifying to be an Educo staff member.
Visit our Staff page and meet some of the out-trip leaders and see the Educo Staff Qualifications section.
Who owns Educo? Educo is a non-religious charitable society registered in B.C. It is run by a Board of Directors who hire a program director to handle the operation of the school.
How do I get to Educo?
See the maps on Traveller's Info page to get here!
If there is no electricity at the site, how do you keep all the food cold? At the site we have a number of propane fridges and freezers (and they all have their own names!) that we keep food in. We have a wood-fired hot water heater for doing dishes. We also have solar panels to operate our phone, and kitchen lights.
Will my children be safe? At Educo, safety is our number one priority. Educo's operating procedures, professionally trained staff and industry-approved outdoor equipment ensure course activities are as safe as possible. Our safety procedures also ensure the risks during course activities are more perceived than real. See our Safety section on the Policies page for more details.
Comments and stories from Educo experiences
"Our daughter is currently on a Rotary exchange for a full year in Brasil. She has been faced with many challenges including being interviewed on live TV about the Canada/Brasil dispute over beef imports. This was all in Portuguese as well as being interviewed live. A rather tall order for a 17year-old! She was very anxious, but Educo has taught her to believe in herself so she put aside her fears and did the best job she could...a bit of feel the fear and do it anyway."
- Lyn Stroshin, Whistler, BC
"My grandson has attended four years of Educo summer programs, and it has certainly helped him overcome his shyness and difficulties with growing up."
- Rachel Brameld, Victoria, BC
"My boys, being only a year and nine days apart and having a younger brother, are very competitive with each other. One is always trying to show the others up.
"We all had the opportunity to experience the High Ropes, even Mom who is deathly afraid of heights! We knew from talking to the counsellors that Ryan had completed the Highs, so of course we couldn't be outdone! Jeff was unsure and thought he would not continue after going over the Commando, but with some prodding and a suggestion that Ryan would never let him live it down if he quit, Jeff finished the Highs.
"Once home the boys were trading Educo experiences...Jeff told Ryan how he wanted to quit and that he finished the Highs because Ryan had, and Ryan, who never admits to being scared or unsure said, "That's OK Jeff, I cried on the Slinky."
- Angie Sandve, parent
"The Wild Women course was a real highlight of my summer and a welcome opportunity to take a break from my normal routines. It was a wonderful combination of Educo challenge and activities that are especially nourishing for women. From the high ropes to the top of Wild Horse Ridge, from yoga to spontaneous in-depth discussions on mother/daughter relationships, this course proved to go well beyond my expectations. Where else can you get fun, adventurous outdoor activities, relaxing treats like yoga and meditation, scrumptious meals, dancing, drumming, lots of laughter, silliness and surprises all in one week? The staff was incredibly skilled, supportive and sensitive to the participant's needs. I highly recommend this course!"

Just want to let you know that what I see upon Taylor's return from Educo is a person with more self-confidence than when he left. Sounds corny - but Educo is more than a ten-day trek in the woods. I would like to thank you and your staff very much, it's great work that you do.
- Sonja Moore, North Vancouver, BC
"All four of our kids have gone to your adventure school and loved it. We notice how the older ones include that experience in their resumes now, proud of their achievements there. And as their parents, we see how EDUCO develops a remarkable sense of community that supports and encourages individual development. A rare gem in today's world."
- Penny Wilson, Vancouver, BC
"Educo is great simply because it helps show that you are already full of passion and power. Either you see it, or you soon will. That settled, the world is packed full of magic. That's what Educo is!"
- Dave MacLeod, Educo Instructor
I just wanted to drop you a line to let you know how grateful I am, as a mother who has spent alot of time worrying about my son's future. My son was at Educo this August. And, as of August 31, my worries about his future have gone away. He is so different since I picked him up, I still have to pinch myself once in a while. He is doing so very well, it is almost unreal. His confidence is amazing, and school so far has been great!!!! And that is saying a lot for my sweet son. He has struggled with schoolwork and his behaviour forever. Not any more - not even a little bit. I just had the most wonderful parent teacher interview I have ever had for him. It was great!!!!. And I know it's the kids doing the work, but you have to take some of the credit. Your camp and what you do is . . . Wow! I will be grateful forever.
With everything that happens in my son's life I will always have the thought of Educo in the back of my head and how you really have helped save my son, you truly have. I 'm sure you will be seeing my sweet son again and again. I can't possibly thank you enough. You have changed all our lives and all who are lucky enough to get to be around my sweet, sweet son.
Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts,
- The Viskaris, Quesnel BC
Just a note to let you know how wonderful I think your program is. On August 31st, I attended a graduation ceremony for a 17year-old boy at Educo. I was there as a guest, not as a parent. Even though I may not have a special connection with this lad, I could sure feel his excitement as well I could feel that something very significant happened for him while he was at Educo. In my years as a Childcare Counselor I have seen many teens graduate from many different kinds of programs but none of those experiences come close to what I felt that Saturday I was at your facility. As I listened to the young men speak that day I felt I was a part of their experience, it captivated me. Then, after listening to the stories from my young friend, I just knew I had to help keep your program going. Not only was I going to buy a raffle ticket but I decided to sell some too. Keep up the good work!
